As you raise a pet he becomes a part of your family so of course he joins you on family vacations! Travel with your pet can be challenging, but some measures can be taken to make the trip easier on everyone.

Begin Making Adjustments before the Trip
If your pet is going to have to use a different type of feeding container, a special type of food or water, or stay in a different cage, it’s best to begin introducing it several days before the trip instead of the day you’re leaving. Slow adjustment will be easier on your pet before the day of travel.

Pack Your Pet’s Favorites
Bring a bit of home along with you on the road. Packing some of your pet’s favorite toys, treats, or harnesses may help him feel comfortable in his changing surroundings.

Get Immunizations to Keep Your Pet Healthy
Check with your veterinarian before you travel with your pet to be sure he is up-to-date on immunizations. This is especially important if you’re going to be traveling overseas, since foreign countries may expose your animal to different illnesses than those present here in the United States.

Find Pet-Friendly Accommodations
Look online for hotels and restaurants that allow pets to join their owners. Be sure to read their pet policy thoroughly to know the number and types of pets that are welcome to stay, and what restrictions or special pricing you’ll face during your stay.

Traveling with Pets on an Airplane
Air travel your with pet is especially unfamiliar, so it’s a good idea to take some extra precautions. Be sure your pet is fit to travel by getting a pretravel check-up with your vet. Even if your pet is cleared to travel it’s a good idea to bring a first-aid kit and your vet’s phone number in case something happens. You may want to check with your vet about a gentle tranquilizer in case your pet needs help keeping calm.

Before you head to the airport, give your pet a good time of exercise so he’ll be tired and hopefully sleep for the majority of the trip. Pack some food and water in case your pet gets hungry, and you can also give him a light meal before the trip.

Prepare for an Enjoyable Trip
Anticipate an enjoyable vacation when you travel with your pet, and stay as relaxed as possible through the entire journey. Your pet will sense any anxiety on your part and become restless. On the other hand, if you plan for a fun trip, you’ll begin with a relaxed attitude which may rub off on your pet!
